A Beautiful Mind

For those who "hear voices" and "see people". How true was the movie "A Beautiful Mind" to what goes on?

I think that movie was beautiful. It was a way for those of us, who never experienced such a thing, to relate to those that have been diagnosed with schizophrenia or other illnesses that can lead to those symptons, and to perceive how frustrating it can be.

Can you tell us, from your perspective, how close what was portrayed in that movie relates to what you see and hear?

I have schizophrenia and a beautiful mind must be taken with a grain of salt. Most schizophrenics don't see anything. We only hear voices. Those who do drugs are the ones who see things mostly. The delusional state is based on voices and not on sight. The mind is convinced that whole sceneries are happening and the voices are intelligent enough to make sure that you cannot easily figure things out just by looking around. Often times someone with schizophrenia will do reality testing and ask if something is happening. We quickly learn not to do this as the reaction we get is a quick trip to the hospital to be drugged. I have learned that just like John Nash that if given the chance you can habituate to schizophrenia and learn to cope with hearing voices and having delusions without medicines and all of their side effects. If you read the book you will get a better picture of what schizophrenia is like. Just remember that John Nash was an atheist and his delusions are quite different from the average person who believes in the spiritual. John Nash's delusions were a figment of his inflated ego. He thought that he was oh so important. My delusions are about relationships that need fixing from my troubled past. There is always meaning to be found in our delusions so long as recreational drugs were not part of it.
